His strong fingers curl into the waistband of my jeans. With a sharp tug, he yanks them down under my ass and slides them off my legs. Ever so gently, his palms cup the back of my knees, bringing them close to his face for inspection.

“Tore up your fuckin’ legs, baby.”

I try to sit up. “It’s okay, Elias. I wanted to.”

“Tore up your legs. For me.”

I don’t know if it’s the tone of his voice, but something stops my struggle. I give up and slump back down against the couch.

Bending his neck, he brings my knees closer to his face and tenderly brushes his lips against the sore, scraped skin.

“Elias? You okay?” His behavior is frightening me.

He rests his forehead against my thighs. Placing my feet on the floor, he releases my knees. His hands fit into the curve of my waist, and he just sits quietly and breathes against my bare legs.

“Things have been fucked up around here.”

“Elias-ˮ

“Been fighting a lot. Tired. Stressed.”

My heart leaps into my throat. Is he breaking up with me? Oh my god, I think he’s breaking up with me.

“Elias-ˮ

“It’s been really hard trying to make you happy since that fuckwad messed with what we had.”

Had.

Oh, God.

“Elias!”

Suddenly, he sits up, breaking our contact. “We gave it our best, Marlee. We gave it our everything.”

I’m stunned. “I thought things were getting better,” I whisper, pained.

He shakes his head gently, looking away. “We gave it our best.”

A lump forms in my throat. “I don’t know what to say…”

“I do.”

“You do?”

A grin spreads across his handsome face. “April Fool’s.”
